The Toronto Blue Jays have had a shaky start to the 2026 season. The Blue Jays have a 16-18 record (through Sunday, May 3) and are third in the American League East standings. However, they have also been trending in the right direction as of late, winning six out of their last nine games.
Seeing the Blue Jays slowly starting to get things back on track is not surprising. The Blue Jays have a ton of talent on their roster and have the potential to improve as more of their key injured players return to the lineup. Yet, with the Blue Jays trying to catch up to their top rivals in the standings, it would make sense for them to try to make a splash to boost their roster. Due to this, they are now being connected to one of baseball's top stars.
In a recent article for Sports Illustrated, Patrick McAvoy named the Blue Jays among the top potential landing spots for Houston Astros star slugger Yordan Alvarez. Alvarez has been creating some chatter in the rumor mill early this season due to the Astros' brutal start to the campaign. The Astros currently have a 13-21 record and are fourth in the American League West.

Alvarez would give the Blue Jays another star power hitter to work with
With the Blue Jays being in their win-now window and needing another star power hitter in their lineup, it would make a lot of sense if they tried to land Alvarez. He would be a major pickup for their offense and could give them the boost they need to go on a real run.
When looking at the Blue Jays' roster, there is no question that they could use a star like Alvarez in the middle of their batting order. The 28-year-old is one of baseball's most dangerous hitters, and his stats this season demonstrate that. In 34 games this season with the Astros, Alvarez has 12 home runs, 27 RBI, and an impressive .331 batting average. The Blue Jays adding this kind of offense to their lineup would be huge.
Alvarez has also shown excellent consistency over the years, as he hit at least 31 home runs in four of his previous five seasons. The only time out of those five seasons he did not hit the 30-home run mark was last year, but this was because he was limited to only 48 games.
With all of this, the idea of the Blue Jays adding a consistent power hitter like Alvarez is very intriguing. It will be interesting to see if they can strike a deal with the Astros to land him from here.
