The Toronto Blue Jays have had a tough season so far in 2026. They currently sport a 16-20 record and are 8.5 games behind the first-place New York Yankees in the American League East.
Injury trouble is certainly a major reason behind the Blue Jays' cold start to the season. As they continue to get healthier, they will be hoping that they can get things back on track and climb up the standings.

Yet, it is also clear that the Blue Jays should be looking to improve their roster between now and the 2026 MLB trade deadline. One specific area that they should look to bolster is their pitching rotation. Because of this, they are now being viewed as a top trade fit for one of the league's best pitchers.

In a recent article for Sports Illustrated, Zach Pressnell named the Blue Jays as a top potential landing spot for Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara.

"The Blue Jays need another star pitcher on their roster, and a big trade for Alcántara would be the perfect move. This is the kind of trade that would help the Blue Jays push for a World Series this season," Pressnell wrote.

When noting that the Blue Jays could use another high-impact starter in their rotation, it is understandable that they are being viewed as a potential trade destination for Alcantara. He would be a massive pickup for their roster as they look to turn things back around this season.

After a tough 2025 season, Alcantara has been bouncing back very nicely so far in 2026. In seven appearances this campaign, he has a 3-2 record, a 3.04 ERA, and 31 strikeouts. With these kinds of numbers, he would give the front half of Toronto's rotation a significant boost if acquired.

Alcantara would give Blue Jays an incredibly deep starting rotation

If the Blue Jays end up being the lucky team that lands Alcantara this season, their pitching rotation would become very deep. The idea of Kevin Gausman, Dylan Cease, and Alcantara leading Toronto's rotation is very exciting and would undoubtedly make Toronto become a more significant threat in the American League again.

With contenders needing to have top pitching, it would make a lot of sense for the Blue Jays to bolster their rotation by bringing in Alcantara. Yet, with Alcantara being a star pitcher, Toronto will have a lot of competition to try to land his services. He is exactly the kind of pitcher that playoff teams will be pursuing heavily near the deadline.

Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see if the Blue Jays can swing a deal for Alcantara from here.
